May 20, 2002 – TOUGH ONE IN COLD CANADA: RUMAN RETIRES
MID-RACE AT MOSPORT TRANS-AM
Bowmanville, Ontario – It was a tough weekend in Mosport for Ruman Racing at the Victoria Day Trans-Am Round Two race. The weekend began well enough, in practice sessions on Friday Ruman was consistently in the top-10. Saturday morning’s “fast group” qualifying session had just worked up to speed, when a competitor’s crash cut it short. Ruman qualified 15th but started the race on Sunday in 13th as several competitors moved to the back of the field.
Ruman ran strong, moving steadily up to 8th place. On lap 21, he found that an engine problem had developed and brought the car into pit lane. The problem was unable to be fixed and Ruman retired at the halfway point in the race.
“The Cenweld/McNichols Co. Corvette had been gathering strength in the race until the engine problem. I felt really bad for the team since they had worked particularly hard this weekend on improving a number of items. I’m certain we were headed for another top-10 finish, but it just wasn’t meant to be this time,” said Ruman. “While it is always extremely disappointing to retire before the end of the race, we know that it is still early in the season and we’re going to come back strong at Lime Rock next weekend.”
