Munroe Falls, Ohio – After four months of a pause in the season due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, Amy Ruman and the Trans Am Series resumed racing action at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio last weekend. However, Mother Nature did not cooperate for ideal racing conditions.
Round 2 of the 2020 Trans Am Championship presented by Pirelli ran in conjunction with the SVRA Vintage Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio and after a last minute decision by the State of Ohio, the Mid-Ohio team welcomed spectators on to the property to enjoy the weekend.
With the addition of Dan Binks to the team for the weekend, Corvette Racing’s former Crew Chief, the Ruman Racing crew was dialing in the car during testing and practice sessions placing Ruman in the top five in both sessions. As the teams rolled off the grid on Friday evening to qualify, the skies opened and rain soaked the track, very quickly forcing drivers to pit lane to change to rain tires. Ruman qualified seventh on the grid for Saturday’s race.
The weather looked sketchy for the Saturday afternoon race, with more showers predicted. About 45 minutes prior to green flag, the skies opened once again and soaked the track. Rain eased as the green flag flew with most of the field starting the race on Pirelli rain tires. Conditions improved as the track dried towards the end of the race, but it was too late to pit for slick tires. She finished the race in seventh place at her “home track”.
“Seventh is definitely not the result we were aiming for this weekend, but that’s racing. Rain racing is always an adventure, but we will take the finish and move on to Brainerd,” stated Ruman. “It was a pleasure working with Dan this weekend, he’s a legend! I’m just bummed we didn’t get a chance to try out the dry setup for No. 23 McNichols/Cornertech Chevrolet Corvette in qualifying and the race.”
Ernie Francis Jr. leads the TA class championship after Round 2 with 66 points, followed by Tomy Drissi in second – 52, Amy Ruman in third – 46, Simon Gregg in forth – 42, and Chris Dyson sits in fifth – 39 points. The Series travels to Brainerd, MN, July 10-12th. Please visit gotransam.com for ticket, full schedule, and all other weekend information.
