Munroe Falls, Ohio – It was a great start to the Trans Am Championship Presented by Pirelli West Coast swing for Ruman when she left WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca with a second-place finish in hand and headed to Sonoma Raceway. Unfortunately, the momentum did not carry over into Round 5.
Ruman suffered a mechanical failure in the official Trans Am practice session Friday morning, sidelining her for qualifying and missing the session later that afternoon.
“We had a transmission issue that damaged a part we did not have a spare of in the trailer. Our guys in NC overnighted the part and we received it late Saturday morning before the race. Regrettably, we had a few glitches that morning and I missed the green flag. We entered the race late looking to gain as many Championship points as possible, hoping we could pick up some spots if any of the other competitors had any troubles, but that wasn’t the case. Once we knew we couldn’t make up any positions, we parked the No. 23 McNichols Chevrolet Corvette and saved wear and tear on the equipment,” remarked Ruman.
“It was truly a team effort across the board. The guys could’ve easily thrown in the towel when things weren’t going right, but they didn’t and that’s the mentality of our team…never give up. There are highs and lows in racing as in life, but you just can’t quit when you’re down, and that’s the mindset we all had here this weekend at Sonoma. It was a tough loss, but we made the best of it and went home with some valuable points.”
The team headed home and will evaluate everything, regroup, and prep in time for Round 6 at Lime Rock Park at the end of May. Fortunately, Ruman maintained third overall in the points standings after Sonoma.
At the halfway point of the season, Chris Dyson leads the TA National class championship with 157 points, followed by Tomy Drissi in second – 133, Amy Ruman in third – 116, Ken Thwaits in fourth – 114, and Humaid Masaood sits in fifth – with 65 points.
