Munroe Falls, Ohio (20 August 2013) – Amy Ruman returned to Trans Am race action over the weekend as the series took part in Mid-Ohio’s big NASCAR Nationwide Series debut event. Racing in front of a huge crowd of passionate race fans, as well as some representatives from her new sponsor partners, last year’s Trans Am championship runner-up ran among the top-five throughout the entire race.
It was a big weekend for the Ohio-based team, as many hometown fans, family and friends were in attendance. Ruman also welcomed new sponsors Kisling, Nestico, and Redick, LLC (KNR) and Quicklane Tire and Auto, located at Valley Ford Truck in Cleveland. The 3dimensional.com Trans Am Series event at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course marked Round 6 of the 2013 championship and Ruman entered the event fourth in the standings. Ruman Racing had been looking to return to podium form in the home race as the group hoped to gain ground in the championship hunt.
Ruman opened the 40-lap race from fourth on the grid and aimed to move forward through the highly competitive field of 38 cars, but the race immediately fell under yellow when two separate incidents brought out the first of many cautions in the race.
On the restart, Ruman took the green fifth in the order. She did not have much time to make her move forward, due to two more subsequent yellow flag periods, which put the race under caution for nearly half of the 75 minute time certain window. The top-five Trans Am cars led the field with exciting nose to tail racing under green flag conditions. As they reached the half-way point, Ruman ran between fourth and fifth as she swapped positions in a spirited battle with the No. 4 Corvette of Tomy Drissi.
The final restart of the race saw the two Corvettes of Ruman and Drissi battle a few more times, but Ruman found herself running in fifth on the final lap. As the white flag flew, she stayed glued to Drissi’s back bumper and looked for a way by. Ruman made a last turn move through the carousel and almost made the pass stick only to lose grip when the No. 23 McNichols Co/1-800-HURT-NOW Corvette was squeezed into the marbles.
Ruman spun in the final turn, couldn’t re-fire right away and slipped back to ninth in the running order as she took the checkered flag. Ruman did set the second fastest race time under the existing track record, and finished seventh overall in the TA class.
“Unfortunately, Mid-Ohio wasn’t the result we hoped for but we did get a finish in a hard fought race,” offered Ruman. “The race was really tight up front, but there were a lot of yellows not giving me much time to make some moves. I had to try to make that move at the end, that’s what racing is all about! It would have been awesome if I could have made it stick, but not this time. It was great to have KNR and Quicklane on board this weekend in addition to McNichols Co. and Goodyear; I can’t thank them enough for their support. The race was exciting when it was green and I think we gave the fans a great show.”
Ruman remains fourth in the championship standings as the team heads to Brainerd International Raceway on September 1 for Round 7 of the championship.
