Munroe Falls, Ohio – In the chase for the 2019 Trans Am Series Championship Presented by Pirelli title, Amy Ruman is right in the mix after Round 2 at Road Atlanta this weekend. Ruman had her sights set on a podium finish in Braselton, GA – and she achieved just that capturing a third-place finish.
The TA class had an extremely tight qualifying session on Saturday afternoon and Ruman started in fifth for the Sunday morning race in the No. 23 McNichols Co. Corvette. After several days of beautiful Georgia weather, Sunday took a turn for the worse, with wet track conditions from morning rain and temperatures at 45 degrees for the start of the race. Weather looked to improve throughout the race, so teams gambled on starting with slick tires on a wet track, which made for a treacherous first half of the race. The 850hp Trans Am cars took the green flag in single file formation, all getting through turn one unscathed.
Ruman’s strategy was to not make any early mistakes in the wet conditions, banking on a drying track throughout the race. Conditions did improve as the laps clicked off, allowing the drivers to pick up the pace by the halfway point. Chris Dyson and Ruman raced closely in 3rd and 4th, until some late race traffic caught Ruman, creating some distance between them. With two laps to go, it looked like Ruman would finish in fourth-place when Dyson encountered a problem. Ruman advanced to take home third-place hardware.
“I’m pretty pleased with our result today,” said Ruman. “We were a little far back, but at least we captured a third. Our game plan was not to make any mistakes at the beginning, because we knew it was going to dry out at the end, and hopefully, we would be there. I wish it could have been sunny so fans could see what everybody had, but we’ll take a solid third today for good points. I love Road Atlanta. I’ve had success here, three wins and lots of podiums. This track is busy but it’s challenging, and if you have a good car, it can be really fast. But if you have a bad car, it can be treacherous.”
After Round 2, Lawrence Loshak leads the TA class championship with 70 points, followed by Chris Dyson in second – 51, Amy Ruman moves into third – 46, Tomy Drissi moves into fourth – 46, and Simon Gregg is in fifth with – 39 points.
