Munroe Falls, Ohio (5 July 2013) – Though the Trans Am schedule sees a break in race action through the month of July, Ruman Racing will be back racing during the Independence Day weekend as both Amy Ruman and her sister Niki Skinner take part in the SCCA Double Major event at Watkins Glen.
Ruman will run the No. 23 McNichols Co. Corvette in the GT-1 category while Skinner will compete in the Spec Racer Ford (SRF) division for the Finger Lakes SCCA Super Tour event.
The sisters last competed in SCCA competition earlier this year at Summit Point when Ruman dominated in GT-1, scoring two podiums finishes on the weekend. Skinner showed strong in SRF competition, taking home a ninth and 11th place result.
Not only is the return trip to Watkins Glen a quick one, coming just weeks after the Trans Am visit to the track, but it also marks another race visit to a track where Ruman has long been strong. The Ohio-based racer has taken eight trips to the GT-1 podium at Watkins Glen – including a win last year and two victories in 2010. She will look to even further improve that record of success in this weekend’s two-race event.
“We weren’t originally planning to make this trip, but the call to race at the Glen was too loud!” said Ruman. “Watkins Glen is such a classic track everybody just loves racing here. It was a bit of a last minute decision to run the No. 23 McNichols Corvette this weekend but we wanted to make sure that the car is good for Trans Am at Mid-Ohio next month. Plus, it’s always fun to have Niki racing as well – it makes for a fun family weekend.”
Getting out and racing as part of the 4th of July holiday weekend will give Ruman the chance for more quality family time at the track as well as getting to connect with the racing family that convenes for every SCCA weekend.
“We are fortunate to have the freedoms that we do in the US,” said Ruman, who dedicated her Trans Am race at Road America to the Armed Forces last season. “I hope that some of our service men and women around the world get a chance to connect with family at home this weekend. We are so grateful for their service and sacrifices.”
Saturday will feature Race 1 for all classes with Race 2 taking place on Sunday. Each race will be 14 laps around the 3.4-mile historic road course.
