Munroe Falls, OH – Amy Ruman and the team are set to compete in this year’s 47th running of the SCCA National Championship Runoffs presented by Subway, which will be held at Road America, September 20-26th. This will be the second year in a row for the Runoffs at the 14-turn, four-mile circuit. The week-long event includes qualifying from Monday through Thursday and three-straight days of National Championship racing Friday through Sunday. The Runoffs brings together the top national drivers from across the country to compete for the title of National Champion in their respective car classes.
For the fourth time in her career, Amy was the SCCA Northeast National Points Division GT-1 Champion. This season, she captured 3 pole positions out of 5 National races, scored 4 wins, earned a second place at the famed SCCA June Sprints National at Road America, and set four new track records. Ruman has also been competing in the SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Series this season. Out of the five events, she has earned three 3rd place podium finishes at Road America, the Streets of Toronto, and Autobahn Country Club, 5th at New Jersey, and 8th at VIR due to a mechanical failure.
This will be Ruman’s eighth appearance at the Runoffs, where she will be driving the familiar #23 McNichols/Goodyear/ Cenweld Chevrolet Corvette. Her best finishes were in 2003 and in 2009 when she finished both times in 5th. Last year, Ruman fought hard and secured 5th even though she had a smaller motor than most of the field. She had lost the 358ci motor in the Trans-Am race the weekend prior and had to run the smaller 310ci motor, a distinct disadvantage at such a high horsepower track. “It was like bringing a knife to a gunfight,” stated Ruman after the 2009 race.
“This has to be our year!” exclaimed Ruman. “I feel that we have a really good shot to win the Runoffs this time. I finished 3rd in the Trans-Am race here, and 2nd in the June Sprints, so the only spot on the podium I need to claim this season is 1st. The crew has given me an amazing car all year long, and now it’s up to me to focus and get the job done. I also want to thank my faithful sponsors, McNichols, Goodyear, and Cenweld for all of their outstanding support. Also, special thanks goes to another supporter of Ruman Racing, Virginia Tech Alumni Bob Chandler, Corps of Cadets. The #23 is up fitted with Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets (VTCC and CORPS) decals for these last few events.”
Ruman will run the first of three GT-1 qualifiers beginning on Monday, Sept. 20th at 5:00pm, followed by Wednesday at 10:00am and Thursday at 1:00pm. This year’s GT-1 Championship race will be on Saturday, September 25th at 4:30pm (all times listed are EST).
For the second year in a row, the 2010 SCCA National Championship Runoffs will be broadcast live on the Internet from Road America.
