Follow the SCCA National Championship Runoffs Live Online

TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 6, 2007) – The 44th Annual SCCA National Championship Runoffs Presented by AT&T is scheduled to begin with qualifying Monday morning, Oct. 8 at 8 a.m. (CDT). This year, SCCA will offer more online services than ever before, giving people not able to attend the event the opportunity to follow the proceedings as they transpire.
In addition to a re-vamped Live Timing & Scoring system, fans can also follow the races via live audio Web cast Friday through Sunday, hearing the call directly from announcers Ed Conway and John Fippin.
Live Timing & Scoring will be available all week, beginning with the first qualifying session on Monday. New for 2007 will be the ability to see the cumulative times throughout the week. Viewers will have the option of watching the order sorted by the current session or by the combined sessions, including historic data from previous days. As was the case in 2006, SCCA will provide live lap notes via the SCCA Pit Board on race days, Friday through Sunday.

The live audio broadcast will be available throughout the week as well, although the announcers will not be on site until the races begin on Friday, Oct. 12.

ALSO CAPTURED NE POINTS DIVISION GT-1 CHAMPIONSHIP

Munroe Falls, OH – Amy Ruman and the Ruman Racing team are heading to Heartland Park Topeka, KS this weekend to compete in the famed SCCA National Championship Runoffs. Ruman and the team raced in last year’s Runoffs held at Heartland Park, where Amy Ruman grabbed 7th place in the race.

For the second consecutive year, Amy was the SCCA Northeast National Points Division Champion for GT-1. She captured seven pole positions out of seven races, scored five wins, one second place finish, and currently holds four track records. Amy won races at New Hampshire International Speedway (NHIS), Nelsons Ledges, BeaveRun, and Pocono. At Summit Point, she slipped into second when it started raining, after leading most of the race. She did not start at Watkins Glen do to car problems.

Ruman and the team will be camped at Heartland Park Topeka for testing and the week-long event Oct. 4-13th. The SCCA Runoffs bring together the top national drivers from across the country to compete for the title of National Champion in their respective car classes. Only those who place in the top-10 in their Division points standings are invited to compete. Ruman Racing will field the familiar #23 McNichols/Goodyear/Cenweld Chevrolet Corvette in Ruman’s fifth time at the Runoffs. Ruman’s best finish at the Runoff’s was 5th in 2003. She earned a 7th in 2006, 6th in 2005, and 9th in 2004 after having car problems during the race. This year’s GT-1 race will be on Saturday, October 13 at 5:10pm.

“What can I say, I am really excited about this year’s race. It’s shaping up to be a good GT-1 field, and I am ready for this race. We have worked so hard all year long, and I really want to win this race for my team. They have completed some changes to the track which have made the course much faster,” stated Ruman. “Other teams have already been testing on the new track, but we will get our chance to dial in on Friday and Saturday.”

Munroe Falls, OH – Ruman Racing secured very solid finishes this weekend at the SCCA double National weekend at Pocono International Raceway, PA. Amy Ruman nabbed the pole position and victory in both GT-1 races and Niki Ruman finished 10th and 12th in Spec Racer. With these two wins, Amy Ruman brought her 2007 regular season to an end with a total of seven pole positions, five victories, and one 2nd place finish and won the SCCA Northeast Division GT-1 Championship for the second year in a row.

Ruman began the weekend by dominating the qualifying sessions for both races in the #23 McNichols/Goodyear/rumanracing.com Corvette and secured both pole positions. Ruman’s primary competition was Bill Thumel and Jack Busch. In Saturday’s race, Ruman lead from the start of the race to the checkered flag, with Busch and Thumel pressuring only during the first few laps. In Sunday’s race, rain threatened but never materialized. Busch, who started on the outside of the front row, challenged Ruman for the lead and the two went side by side through turns one and two, with Busch inching ahead by turn three. Ruman then made a daring pass into turn one on the second lap, got it done, and then preceded to pull away. In Saturday’s race Ruman finished 17.6 seconds in front of 2nd place Busch; she finished Sunday with a 21.4 second lead over 2nd place Thumel.

“I was very happy with our efforts at Pocono, coming away with two poles and two wins. The McNichols/Goodyear/rumanracing.com Corvette was really handling well and the crew had the set-up just right,” said an elated Ruman. “In the past three years at Pocono I was only able to come away with close 2nd place finishes, but now I have finally won here.”

Niki Ruman, in the #20 rumanracing.com/Dynasty Motorsports Spec Racer, qualified in 16th for both events. She finished 10th in Saturday’s event and 12th in Sunday’s race, both of which had nearly 30 car fields. “Both races were very fun. It was a challenge to keep a good draft going, but that is the hallmark of this track,” said Ruman.

Amy Ruman is coming off a month of rest and down time since the Watkins Glen weekend in July. Ruman was unable to compete in the Glen race and missed the Nelson Ledges Race at the end of July due to mechanical issues following the Glen. Ruman will try to make it up this weekend in the #23 McNichols/Goodyear/rumanracing.com Corvette by locking in two more GT-1 wins to finish off the season before the October SCCA National Runoffs.

“Last year I had two great battles for 1st place, but ended up with two second places. I am on a mission to get the wins here this weekend. We are ready to go and I know we should be really fast here,” commented Ruman.

Niki Ruman will also be driving this weekend in her #20 rumanracing.com/Dynasty Motorsports Spec Racer after competing in the July National at Watkins Glen. “The draft is really cool at this track, which makes us run pretty fast. My crew has given me a great car all year so I hope to put together some quick lap times and have two fun races,” stated Ruman.

Ohio woman earns pole
Paul Newman will start fifth in GT-1 race.

WATKINS GLEN — In the battle of age and the sexes in the GT-1 division at the Glen Nationals, Round 1 went to youth and a woman.

Amy Ruman, 33, of Kent, Ohio, grabbed the GT-1 pole position in her No. 3 McNichols Co. Chevy Corvette during qualifying for the 60th running of the Sports Car Club of America-sanctioned amateur event at Watkins Glen International on Saturday.

Ruman’s pole time of 1 minute, 52.601 was a tenth of a second better than the class lap record she set in the race last year. It was her fifth pole of the year. Today, she’ll be gunning for a fourth consecutive national win.

“I’m really happy with that lap time,” Ruman said. “We’re running real good this weekend.”

Ruman held off 42-year-old Simon Gregg and 82-year-old Paul Newman. Gregg, the former SCCA Trans-Am driver, was second in his No. 59 Corvette. Newman, the Academy Award-winning actor, qualified fifth in a Corvette that carries No. 82, also his age.

“A middle-aged man racing a young woman and an old fellow, that would make a good podium (today),” said Gregg, who is the son of one of America’s legendary sports-car racers, the late Peter Gregg.

The Glen Nationals, which date back to the original race in the streets of Watkins Glen in 1948, are the longest continuous-running road race event in North America.

More than 320 drivers took part in two qualifying sessions on the Glen’s 3.4-mile Grand Prix course. The 30 classes of cars are combined into seven groups. Each will compete in 14-lap races today, starting at 8:30 a.m.

Ruman set her pole time in the first Group 5 qualifying session, where finding a lap without traffic from the many slower cars from different classes was difficult.

“Somehow, I found a small hole in the traffic,” she said.

The GT-1 cars were given a reprieve in the second session after Newman asked his competitors and race officials if they would let their faster cars run a 10-minute solo session, without any other class cars on track.

Gregg, who returned to racing on the amateur level this year after running in the Trans-Am Series from 1998-2003, admitted he was a “little rusty” in posting a 2-minute flat lap in the first session. With no traffic to contend with, he improved seven seconds in the second session.

“I’m still improving, but that was a good pace for me,” Gregg said. “I’ll take that.”

Newman qualified with a lap of 1:56.366.

“I was slow as a snail,” said Newman, who explained the extra drag from the rear bodywork of his car was part of the reason. “I got two clean runs (second session), so I have no excuses.”

Newman, who retired from acting in May, has been racing since the early 1970s. He has four SCCA Runoffs championships, the last in 1986.

Newman, who admitted he’s slowed down a bit since then, joked, “I wish I was 81 again.”
