Munroe Falls, OH – Amy Ruman’s second appearance at the Road America SCCA June Sprints National race this past weekend did not exactly go according to plan. The good news was qualifying, where Ruman, piloting the #23 McNichols Co/Goodyear/Cenweld Chevrolet Corvette, qualified on the front row in second position with a 2:08.58, just 4-tenths off the pole time set by Cliff Ebben at a 2:08.16.
In the second largest SCCA National event, 22 GT-1 entrants took to the track for this 15-lap race on the 4-mile Road America circuit. Ebben, Ruman, Gray, Mohrhauser, and Lagod rounded out the top 5 slots for the start of the race. Right out of the box, Ruman, Gray and Mohrhauser were in a three-way battle for second position. For a few laps, Ruman dropped to 4th pressuring Mohrhauser for 3rd. On lap 5 of the race, something let go on the car coming out of turn 3 as she headed down the second straightaway. The car filled with smoke and Ruman could not see anything but was able to bring the car to rest in the runoff area of turn 5.
“I was heading into the second fastest part of the track, when all of the sudden I couldn’t see a thing,” explained Ruman. “I was just doing my best not to hit a wall because I had no idea where I was. I thought we blew a motor big time, but it turns out that just an oil line blew off a fitting. I was fortunate that the car didn’t catch fire and I was able to get the car stopped near the Road America safety crew in turn 5.”
“I am so disappointed for my sponsors, crew, and fans that were cheering for us. It was just one of those mechanical things, we had a fast car all weekend and I really thought I would be on the podium at the end of the day. The good news is we got good practice time in for the Trans-Am race and the Runoffs that will be held here in September.”
Ruman posted the second fastest lap during the race, just 1-tenth off the fastest race lap set by Ebben. Video coverage for the June Sprints will be available on the www.GoRacingTV.com website next week. Check out the website and look for Amy’s personal interview by the GoRacingTV staff.
