Munroe Falls, OH – The Ruman sisters raced this past weekend at the SCCA National in Summit Point, West Virginia. Amy Ruman secured the pole position for the GT-1 race in qualifying, while Niki Ruman started 11th on the grid in Spec Racer.
Ruman put her #23 McNichols Co./Goodyear GT-1 Corvette on the pole with a 1:10.6 under her existing track record of a 1:11.29. Unfortunately Ruman had her hands full right from the start, with Jack Busch beating her to turn 1 on the start of the race. Ruman hounded Busch lap after lap as the two ran nose to tail. As they started lapping the field, Ruman was able to get by Busch and take the lead. Ruman put a bit of distance between the two for a number of laps, but traffic started to play a role again, allowing Busch to close the gap. Busch then set up Ruman and passed her back on the front straight for the lead. Ruman continued to stay glued to his bumper, but took the checkered in 2nd.
“What a fun race,” remarked Ruman. “Jack and I had a great duel going, but I just couldn’t hold on for the win. The car didn’t have the best handling during the race; the track conditions changed a lot from the rain and the race prior to ours. I’m looking forward to the upcoming weekend at Nelson’s, hopefully I can capture a win at my home track.”
Niki Ruman qualified the #23 McNichols Co./Dynasty Motorsports Spec Racer in 11th position, which placed her mid-pack in the 19 car field. From the start of the race a battle raged between Ruman and the three cars that qualified ahead of her, Bruce Kromminga, Dan Brooks, and Wade White. They ran nose to tail for the entire race, passing and swapping positions frequently. White fell back after a spin. About 2 laps from the end of the race, Ruman passed Kromminga and pressed Brooks down to the checkered flag but could not gain enough to secure a pass. The final tally was Brooks (7th), Ruman (8th), Kromminga (9th).
“I love to have a battle in a race,” said Niki Ruman. “We ran close together and there was good passing and drafting. That four cars can run nose to tail for the entire race, swapping positions is just plain good racing for the competitors and the fans.”
Amy and Bob Ruman will be competing in the National this Memorial Day weekend at the team’s home track – Nelson Ledges Raceway, Ohio. Bob will be taking over and running Niki’s #23 McNichols Co. Spec Racer in his first race of the season. The team is hoping for some great races in GT-1 and Spec Racer for the home crowd.
