January 06, 2002 – Amy Ruman Scores 3rd Place at First GT-1 Race
of Career at Sebring National
Kicking off Ruman Racing’s 2002 Season
Sebring, FL, Jan. 6 — Amy Ruman dialed right in to her first racing effort in GT-1. Ruman tested and then competed in the SCCA Winter National on the 1.7 mile Sebring course in Bob Ruman’s Trans-Am Corvette, which was modified to GT-1 rules. Posting top times in every session, Ruman qualified 4th in the twelve car GT-1 field. The race group included GT-1, GT-2, GT-3 and AS totaling twenty-seven cars. It began to rain as the field began the pace lap, all on slicks. There were several incidents on the first lap and as Ruman hit the wet/dry, she spun coming out of a turn. As she rejoined she worked her way back up to finish 3rd, passing the entire field with the exception of the first and second place cars.
“I could not be more pleased with my first GT-1 race. Each session I was out, the more settled in I became. My competitors really set the stakes high with their lap times – and to qualify 4th was a great achievement for me. When I got turned around early in the race I was upset, but my goal was a top 5 finish and that’s what I set out to do – 3rd was a bonus!”
