Munroe Falls, OH – The 47th running of the SCCA National Championship Runoffs presented by Subway held at Road America the week of September 20-26th came to a close with Amy Ruman standing on the podium in 3rd place for her best career Runoffs finish. Ruman’s third was also the first Runoffs podium by a female racer since 1997, when Andrea Kashiewicz finished runner-up in Sports 2000.
Ruman, the four-time SCCA Northeast National Points Division GT-1 Champion, qualified the #23 McNichols/Goodyear/Cenweld Chevrolet Corvette in third position on the starting grid. It was a crisp, cool fall afternoon when the green flag flew for the 18-car field, 13-lap race. Ruman had a good start and kept the leaders, Michael Lewis and Cliff Ebben, in sight for nearly half the race. She remained running in 3rd and unchallenged to finish the race.
“I couldn’t be more proud to stand on the podium for the GT-1 National Championship race,” stated Ruman. “It took us eight tries to get here and I couldn’t be happier. We didn’t have too many laps here this week, so we just tried to have a balanced set up. I definitely tried to keep the leaders in sight. At the beginning, I thought the car might come to me. Especially if they were racing each other real hard, I might be able to catch up with them and take advantage of that if I could conserve the tires. They were in my sights for a while and then midway I lost sight of them. At that point, I was running real consistent laps. So unless something detrimental were to happen, I knew I would remain in third position.”
Speedcast Productions will soon post on demand versions of each of the 24 Runoffs races on www.SpeedcastTV.com.
