Munroe Falls, OH – It was a cold, wet and windy race weekend in West Virginia last weekend during the SCCA National at Summit Point, yet the Ruman Racing Team drivers, Amy and Niki Ruman had solid finishes.
Amy Ruman skipped the morning GT-1 qualifying session on Saturday as it poured rain. But it stopped raining for the second qualifier, and Ruman headed out on a very damp track. Grip was a bit of an issue, but Amy went out on slicks and qualified in 3rd. For Sunday’s race, Ruman moved into second place on the start, but hit a leftover puddle going into turn five and spun on lap one. She was able to continue after the entire field passed, luckily not getting hit. Ruman worked her way back through the field to take the McNichols/Cenweld Corvette to a 3rd place finish.
“Unfortunately, I made a mistake right at the beginning of the race. I hit that puddle and when I put the power down the back end went right around. It was really cold out and for the rest of the race I had a tough time getting any heat in my tires for better grip. I was able to secure the second fastest time of the race, but by then 1st and 2nd place were out of reach. My hat goes off to Trevor (Hopwood). He was really hooked up this race and had a good car,” stated Amy.
Niki qualified 14th on a fairly dry track on Saturday afternoon. Sunday afternoon’s Spec Racer race weather was dry and windy. Niki gained two positions on the start in the Cenweld/rumanracing.com spec racer and raced with four other cars the entire competition. She finished 12th.
“It was a good, clean race for me,” said Niki. “I had momentum on the start and gained a few positions. There was some close racing, especially at the end. I was able to build up a pretty good draft coming out of the last turn on the final lap in hopes of passing the car ahead of me, but I was still a few feet shy when we reached the checkered flag.”
