Munroe Falls, OH – The 2009 racing season has officially come to a close for Amy Ruman and the Ruman Racing team. During the ten long days in Elkhart Lake, WI, Ruman and the team had many ups and downs at Road America which began with the Muscle Milk SCCA Trans-Am season finale.

The Trans-Am race was September 20th. During qualifying, Ruman had a car problem on lap 1 and had to pit. While the crew was able to work out the problem, the session was red flagged due to an on-track incident. When the track went green, Ruman set out to get in a good lap when another red flag occurred and the session was halted again, leaving Ruman with no qualifying time. Worrying that the session would expire, she waited at pit out. Luckily, race control said there would be enough time for one out lap and one hot lap before the session was over, so Ruman zoomed out and was able to lay down a one lap qualifier scoring her 6th spot on the grid! In the race, Ruman had a great start and edged out Cliff Ebben by turn one, advancing her to 5th and running tight with the lead pack. That would be short lived, and on lap five she lost the engine on the back straight.

“It was a huge disappointment to lose that engine,” stated Ruman. “I was going to run the same engine for the Runoffs race because it was the only 358 in our stable.”

Following the Trans-am race on Sunday, the week-long 46th annual running of the famed SCCA National Championship Runoffs began from Sept. 21-27th. The SCCA Runoffs brings together the top national drivers from across the country to compete for the title of National Champion in their respective car classes. Only those who place in the top-10 in their Division points standings are eligible to compete. Ruman ran her familiar #23 McNichols/Goodyear/Cenweld Chevrolet Corvette in her seventh appearance at the Runoffs.

The GT-1 class only saw a completely dry track on the last qualifying session, where Ruman drove hard to put herself 7th in the starting lineup. She was one of the only cars in the field running a smaller 310 cubic inch engine, while most of the drivers in the field ran the bigger horsepower 358 engines. If she had qualified with the same time that she qualified with for the Trans-Am race, she would have qualified in the second spot for the Runoffs race.

The field took the green flag and Ruman found herself in trouble quickly. By turn five, the field bottlenecked and slowed into the corner. Ruman cut to the inside for a shot up the inside of the hill to turn six, but caught the wrong gear and dropped three spots to 10th. While in a dogfight back to the front of the pack, Ruman and the #3 car driven by Kyle Kelley were side by side coming out of turn 7. Kelley did not cut Ruman any slack and moved over hitting the #23 and forcing her into the grass. Ruman regained control and had to tuck in behind him.

The two of them moved up through the pack, all the while Ruman right on Kelley’s bumper. Ruman made several attempts to pass, but could not get it done. On the final lap of the race the two had a wicked battle for fourth spot. Ruman pulled alongside of Kelley’s Camaro in the last turn of the track, the two touched and went spinning. Both drivers got going again and held on to 4th and 5th slots respectively, having built enough of a lead over 6th position.

“What can I say, I have mixed emotions about that race,” exclaimed Ruman. “I was so mad at myself when I hit the wrong gear coming out of turn 5 because I knew I would be behind the eight ball if any of the guys got in front of me on this horsepower track. I just don’t have the torque they do coming off the corners with the 310 motor. I had quite a battle going with Kelley, and I just couldn’t get any of my passes to stick. Unfortunately, he didn’t give me a whole lot of room when I did get beside him and I think that was a way for him to insure that I wouldn’t get past him. I was happy to finally get a solid top-five finish again at the Runoffs, but disappointed that I didn’t have the motor for a podium.”

“I want to send a heartfelt thank you out to all of my sponsors, McNichols Co., Goodyear, and Cenweld for another great season of racing. Without them, I could not do what I love to do!”

Munroe Falls, OH – Amy Ruman and the Ruman Racing team are heading to Elkhart Lake, WI tomorrow to compete in two races being held at the renowned racing course, Road America. Ruman will run in the 2009 season finale of the Muscle Milk SCCA Trans-Am race this weekend Sept. 20th, which kicks off the week-long 46th annual running of the famed SCCA National Championship Runoffs from Sept. 21-27th. SCCA moved the 2009 Runoffs to the 14-turn, four-mile Road America circuit this year, after being held at Heartland Park Topeka, KS the previous three years.

With the rebirth of the Trans-Am Series in the 2009 season, Ruman made the decision to divide her time and focus on running select Trans-Am races and enough GT-1 Nationals to qualify for the SCCA National Championship Runoffs. She competed in four Muscle Milk SCCA Trans-Am races. Ruman qualified in the top-10 for all four races, grabbing a 3rd place and her first podium finish in the series at Road Atlanta, GA in the season opener. She was 6th at VIR, 12th at Mid-Ohio (mechanical problems), and a 4th at Watkins Glen. Ruman placed 3rd in the GT-1 Northeast National Points Division, capturing 3 pole positions out of 5 races, scoring 3 wins and a second place finish which earned her a spot in at the 2009 Runoffs.

The SCCA Runoffs brings together the top national drivers from across the country to compete for the title of National Champion in their respective car classes. Only those who place in the top-10 in their Division points standings are eligible to compete. Ruman Racing will field the familiar #23 McNichols/Goodyear/Cenweld Chevrolet Corvette in Ruman’s seventh appearance at the Runoffs. Ruman’s best finish at the Runoff’s was 5th in 2003. Ruman’s luck is bound to turn around this year: in 2008 she placed 14th after a wing failure, in 2007 she did not finish due to damage from being hit, she earned a 7th in 2006, 6th in 2005, and 9th in 2004 after having car problems during the race.

Ruman will hit the track for Muscle Milk SCCA Trans-Am practice on Saturday Sept. 19th at 9:10am and 3:20pm. Qualifying will take place on Sunday morning at 8:00am followed by the final Tran-Am race of the season at 1:00pm (all times are CDT).

For the GT-1 Runoffs, Ruman will run the first of three qualifiers beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 22nd at 11:30am, followed by Wednesday at 8:35am and Thursday at 4:25pm (all times are CDT). This year’s GT-1 Championship race will be on Sunday, September 27th at 2:30pm.

“I am excited to get back in the car again! We have been off for about a month since the July race at Watkins Glen. I am glad we are having a Trans-Am race the weekend before the Runoffs,” exclaimed Ruman. “I’m hoping to be on the podium again for Trans-Am and I feel that we have a good shot to win the Runoffs this year. I also want to thank my sponsors, McNichols, Goodyear, and Cenweld for all of their outstanding support. For these final two races, I will be sporting Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets (VTCC) decals thanks to a special Tech Alumni supporter Bob Chandler.”

Sports Car Club of America, Inc. announced that every race from the 2009 SCCA National Championship Runoffs® will be broadcast live on the Internet from Road America.
TOPEKA, Kan. (Aug. 21, 2009) - Sports Car Club of America, Inc. announced today that every race from the 2009 SCCA National Championship Runoffs(r) will be broadcast live on the Internet this September from Road America.

Beginning Friday, Sept. 25 at 8:00 a.m. (CDT, GMT -6), all 24 races crowning the best amateur racing drivers in America will be broadcast with flag-to-flag coverage of the 14-turn, four-mile Road America circuit, featuring expert commentary and post-race interviews. Each of the three race days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) will feature eight Championship races from the 46th annual Runoffs, which culminates the 70-race SCCA Club Racing National Racing Season.

Speedcast Productions will exclusively carry the live action during race days through SpeedcastTV.com, as well as on demand versions of each of the 24 races with additional content after the event has concluded.

“We’re very excited to once again have live coverage of the Runoffs,” SCCA VP of Marketing and Communications Eric Prill said. “While we’re disappointed that economic issues have ended our longtime run on SPEED Channel for 2009, we believe that Speedcast Productions offers a fantastic alternative. For the first time ever, the entire event can be seen anywhere in the world live. Additionally, within a month of the conclusion of the event, every race will be available for fans to watch at any time, free of charge.”

Speedcast Productions has created the most comprehensive and cost-effective video production and delivery program in motorsports. Leveraging extensive live production capabilities, powerful online tools and relationships throughout the television industry, Speedcast has positioned itself on the cutting edge of streaming video production.

Since its inception in 2006, Speedcast has produced and delivered video coverage of over 60 road, oval and kart races. In 2009, Speedcast made the debut of its groundbreaking live webcasts with the Championship Karting International series.

“As a former Runoffs competitor, I’m incredibly excited to be involved with this great event,” Speedcast President Clark Cambern said. “This is a unique and challenging event to cover, but we look forward to bringing the live event to a worldwide audience for the first time. At SpeedcastTV, we’re committed to delivering unique and compelling motorsports events to our viewers, and the Runoffs is a perfect addition to our lineup.”

As has been the case with previous Runoffs television coverage, Speedcast’s broadcast will feature a full compliment of cameras around the Road America racetrack to follow all of the action. The broadcast will include both play-by-play and analysis separate from the event public address system and post-race interviews. The on-demand versions of the races will include enhanced interviews and in-car camera footage.

“Given the changes in the economy over the last year and the proliferation of streaming video and online content, this is a natural move for the National Championship Runoffs,” SCCA President and CEO Jeff Dahnert said. “Fans can watch the event live, see it again and again on demand and, if they so desire, buy the full event on DVD. What else could anyone want?

“We would like to extend our thanks to the Road America staff for being so gracious in facilitating SCCA and Speedcast in this endeavor,” Dahnert added.

SCCA has a number of advertising opportunities available within the broadcasts from graphic billboards and 30-second spots to in-car camera placements, all at very reasonable rates. For more information, please contact Melissa Flesher at mflesher@scca.com or 800-770-2055.

As always, SCCA is interested in compelling storylines for its Runoffs public relations and broadcast efforts. Please submit information to RunoffsPR@scca.com.

Munroe Falls, OH - Amy Ruman entered her fourth Trans-Am race of the season at Watkins Glen International. The Trans-Am race ran the Watkins Glen “long course” where Ruman holds the GT-1 track record at 1:52.693 seconds around the 3.4-mile course. Ruman, in the #23 McNichols Co./Goodyear/Cenweld Corvette, was 4th in practice, with a lap time two seconds faster than her track record, at 1:50.366 seconds, with an average speed of 110.9 mph. Trans-Am qualifying was held early race-day morning and right out of the box, Ruman encountered a car problem. The crew worked on the car in the pit lane and was able to get her back on the track with five minutes left in the session. Ruman was able to put together enough of a lap to score her an eight place starting position on the 15-car grid, with a time of 1:51.534.

“I was lucky enough to get back on the track to piece together a qualifying lap, but disappointed that we had a oil pressure problem which lead to a motor change before the race. We thought we could fix it, but we just didn’t want to risk the motor not lasting the 90 mile race,” said Ruman. Ruman was one of three competitors, Ave and Drissi, which had to change a motor before Sunday’s race.

“I had a great start, and began working my way through the field. The whole race I had a great battle with Daniel Ramoutarsingh from Rocketsports Racing. We had close, intense racing for most of the race, swapping positions in nearly every turn. It had to be a fun duel to watch for the fans, too. All of a sudden, I started having electrical problems and dropped back a bit from Daniel. I made some changes in the cockpit and thought I had cured it and starting charging again for Daniel. I closed the gap but then the ignition problem came back, cutting my power. I had to play it conservatively to the end of the race and took the checkered in 4th place. We had the speed for the podium, but unfortunately we were plagued with race day problems again.”

Amy Ruman is currently 9th in the Trans-Am point standings, having only run in 4 of the 6 races. Ruman will compete in Round 7 of the Muscle Milk SCCA Trans-Am Series at Road America on September 20th followed by the SCCA National Championship Runoffs at Road America September 21st-27th.

Niki Ruman hopped in the #23 McNichols Co./Dynasty Motorsports Spec Racer for her second race of the season. She qualified 28th in the 41-car field and moved up to finish 24th. “Watkins Glen is surely one of my favorite venues,” stated Ruman. “There was good, clean racing this weekend and that always makes things fun.”

Munroe Falls, OH - Amy Ruman needed to accomplish two things this past weekend at Nelson’s Ledges - get a finish and get a win - she did both. In an exciting qualifier, Ruman and Ryan McManus battled it out for the pole position, trading spots several times during the session. Ruman came out on top by only two tenths over McManus and put the #23 McNichols Co./Goodyear/Cenweld Corvette on the pole.

The weather was great for a race on Saturday, and Ruman and McManus took the green. Ruman got out in front and took the lead by turn one with McManus hot on her tail. Each were faster then the other in different parts of the track, but Ruman led flag to flag for the win.

“That was a great race. Ryan filled my mirrors almost the whole race, and traffic played a big role during the race,” commented Ruman. “This win was particularly satisfying because the competition was intense.”

Bob Ruman tried his hand at racing the #23 McNichols Co./Dynasty Motorsports Spec Racer again, finishing both races in 9th position. In Saturday’s race Ruman started 10th, and he battled it out with DG Lex nose to tail the whole race. Ruman started 8th on Sunday, and unfortunately got hit at the start of the race, slowing his momentum a bit.

“I had fun racing both days,” stated Ruman. “This is why I like this class so much, no matter where you are in the field there is always someone to race against.”

The team is headed to Watkins Glen this weekend, where Amy Ruman will compete in Round 6 of the Muscle Milk SCCA Trans-Am Series and Niki Ruman will take over the reigns of her Spec Racer for the National race.

Munroe Falls, OH - Amy and Bob Ruman altered their Independence Day weekend schedule and decided at the last minute to go racing. They will compete in the Firecracker Double National this weekend at the team’s home track - Nelson Ledges Raceway, Ohio. Bob will run Niki’s #23 McNichols Co. Spec Racer and Amy will run the #23 McNichols Co./Goodyear/Cenweld Corvette in GT-1.

“Since I didn’t finish the June Sprints a few weeks ago, I still need one more National race finish to qualify for the Runoffs in September,” explained Amy Ruman. “Hopefully we will get a finish and a win this weekend!” If everything goes as planned, Amy will run only the Saturday race.

Bob Ruman will climb back in the #23 McNichols Co./Dynasty Motorsports Spec Racer for both races, Saturday and Sunday. “Since we were coming out for Amy this weekend, I figured I might as well go have some fun too,” laughed Bob. “I really enjoy running the Spec Racer.”
